Monica Förster n'est pas seulement une designer extrêmement douée, elle s'est aussi avérée extrêmement sympathique. C'est donc à elle que
j'ai fait allusion l'autre jour et que j'ai eu le plaisir de rencontrer la semaine dernière à Stockholm! Une visite très intéressante à son studio dans l'après-midi et une discussion tout aussi agréable le soir à table lors de
ce diner.
(Toutes les photos ci-dessous sont prises par moi dans son studio)Née à Stockholm, Monica a grandie dans le nord de la Suède où ses parents tenaient un hotel-restaurant réputé dans la ville de Dorotea. Son dernier projet, une série de couverts en acier inoxydable pour
Gense, lui a permis de renouer avec cet intérêt pour le repas et la table qui a caractérisé son enfance. La collection, qui s'appelle Dorotea justement, allie les 150 ans de tradition et savoir-faire de ce fabricant suédois avec le design moderne et international de Monica.
Monica Förster is not only an extremely talented designer, she also appeared to be an extremely nice person. She is the designer I hinted about the other day and that I was so pleased to meet last week in Stockholm! A very interesting visit to her studio in the afternoon and a just as pleasant discussion at the table in the evening at this dinner.

Monica was born in Stockhom but grew up in the northern parts of Sweden where her parents ran a famous hotel-restaurant in the town of Dorotea. Her latest project, a new cutlery series in stainless steel for Gense, has allowed her to renew with this interest for the meal and the set table that has characterized her childhood. The collection, called Dorotea, combines this Swedish producer's 150 years of tradition and craftmanship with Monica's modern international design.
La nappe de la table de travail du studio témoigne de ce projet et raconte le développement de la série de couverts. L'interaction avec la fourchette, le couteau et la cuillère était une partie importante dans le processus de création, comme le montre le dessin sur la photo ci-dessous. Les figurines sur la table représentent Monica et son équipe très internationale, chacun avec sa personnalité. Monica nous a raconté, avec le sourire, que celle à droite, le regard tourné vers l'avant, le doigt pointé vers son équipe, c'est elle...
The tablecloth on the work table in the studio shows how the project and the cutlery series developed. The interaction with the fork, the knife and the spoon was an important part of the design process in the way that the drawing on the photo below shows. Diplômée de Beckmans et Konstfack, les grandes écoles de design en Suède, les premiers pas de Monica dans le monde du design n'étaient pourtant pas évidents. Même si son talent était reconnu, son design était considéré si original que les fabricants ne voyaient pas très bien ce qu'elle pourrait leur apporter... Il faut dire qu'à une époque ou l'on s'attendait à voir quelque chose comme une belle table en bois à l'examen d'une grande école, Monica a présenté un abattant wc photoluminescent... A défaut de trouver un employeur, elle n'avait donc pas d'autre choix que de se lancer à son compte, et elle a bien fait!
Monica has a degree from both Beckmans and Konstfack, two of Sweden's main design schools, but her first steps in the world of design were however not that obvious. Although her talent was acknowledged, her design was considered so quaint that the producers did not really see how she could contribute to their company... After all, at a time when you were expected to present something like a high quality wooden table as your graduate work, Monica came up with a photo-luminescent toilet seat... So when she didn't find an employer to hire her, she saw no other solution than to go into business by herself, which seems to have been a good idea!
Aujourd'hui, Monica travaille au niveau international avec des sociétés telles que Cappellini, Poltrona Frau, De Padova, Tacchini, Svenskt Tenn, Offecct, Swedese, Design House Stockholm, Gärsnäs, Zero... et bien d'autres. Elle a aussi reçu de nombreuses récompenses: Designer de l'année en Suède en 2006 et 2007, Design plus en Allemagne, représentée dans le International Design Yearbook, entre autres...
Today Monica works on an international level with companies such as Cappellini, Poltrona Frau, De Padova, Tacchini, Svenskt Tenn, Offecct, Swedese, Design House Stockholm, Gärsnäs, Zero... and many more. She has also been awarded Designer of the year in Sweden in 2006 and 2007, Design plus in Germany, been featured in the International Design Yearbook, just to name a few...

Les vases en cristal noir en haut de l'étagère sont inspirées par la mode: T-shirt, col roulé, col en v (édition limitée produite par Skruf) et en bas à droite, derrière l'une des tables de la collection Sun, Cake, Dot (pour Nola), on retrouve Forest (pour Modus), la forêt artificielle pour des gens comme moi, qui aiment la nature mais oublient d'arroser leurs plantes...
The vases in black crystal on the top of the shelf are inspired by fashion: T-shirt, turtle neck, v-neck (limited edition produced by Skruf), and at the bottom right, behind one of the tables from the Sun, Cake, Dot collection (for Nola), you will find Forest (for Modus), the artificial forest for people like me, who like nature but forget to water their plants...
